Sketches of the Sunshine Coast
The Tunes
01. Smuggler's Secret: The musical idea for this tune came after hearing some dudes jammin' at a restaurant in the mall in Gibsons. It came together after kayaking from Secret Cove to Smuggler's Cove
02. Redrooff Green: This tune was written in a park called Coopers Green on Redrooff Road north of Sechelt.
03. The Land Between Two Waters: This tune was inspired by many visits to the town of Sechelt. There are so many interesting areas in the town, the Beaches, the parks, the duckpond, the First Nations Plaza, the seaplane base..etc, etc.
suite: Sunset at RC
An amazing sunset from the Roberts Creek pier inspired the four movements of this piece.
- Twilight: The Sun and Crescent Moon were both heading for the west horizon on the same track, the moon setting about 10 minutes behind the sun
.
- Waltz of the Waves: The waves were crashing on the rocks in 3/4 time, all I did was jam along
.
- Deep Shades of Blue: The sky and the water were turning many shades as the sun was dipping below the horizon
.
07. The Moon Follows the Sun: The moon was a crescent and followed the same path as the sun, as the sky turned red and the crescent moon was setting, it reminded me of the Turkish flag so I used the Turkish scale. (mixolydian mode of the harmonic minor) and Jammed it out
.
08. Firecircle Rag: One of the first tunes written and the tune that got me into this project. After a 3 day (and night) party at a friend's place near Roberts Creek, the main lick for this tune came to me and never left
.
09. Bonnie Beach: Bonniebrook Beach is a great place to sit around and play some guitar provided the wind isn't too strong, this tune was based on an improvisation while sitting on a log fighting the wind...my mp3 thingy barely picked up the guitar at all, but still enough to bring it home and learn the tune.
10. 101 Blues: HWY 101....The only road up and down the coast has many twists and turns, ups and downs, views, critters on the road, other distractions and goes through a few towns as well..obey the speed limits or you could go crashing into something....or flying over the edge
11. BR 109: An afternoon at the Gibsons Legion with my Dad??? OK...I'll give it a go, after hanging with him and his "lady friends" for a while I figured I'd split and try to write a tune about the legion...when none was forthcoming, I went back, when I got back some guys playing bagpipes walked in and I noted on a lottery slip what the bass drum was doing and some melodic ideas from the bagpipes,,,when they split some guys playing accordians walked in and it was all the inspiration I needed.........
12. The Narrows: My first visit to Skookumchuk Rapids was in 1989 and I made a videotape of the water rushing and the surrounding area...I wrote this tune watching the tape
13. Fork in the Trail
14. Whispering Firs
15. They Don't Call It the Rainforest For Nothing
16. Arts and Crafts Fair: A piece originally improvised on a gig at the Sechelt Arts and Crafts Fair, thanks to a video of the proceedings, I was able to reproduce most of what I played that day.
All three of these tunes were written either at the place in the picture or on the trails leading to it..A firecircle in the woods up the hill from Roberts Creek
